One person was seriously injured on Wednesday when a car crashed into the back of a South Dakota Department of Transportation vehicle.

At 2:16 p.m., 57-year-old Eugene Winebarger, Jr., of Glendale, Arizona, was traveling west on Interstate 90, approximately three miles west of Reliance, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

A 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup — a DOT vehicle with a large sign in the back with flashing yellow arrows advising vehicles to move into the driving lane — was parked on the shoulder near the median.

The 2004 Oldsmobile SUV driven by Winebarger collided into the back of the pickup while 58-year-old James Bossert was inside.

Bossert was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries, while Winebarger sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.

Both men were transported to a Chamberlain hospital, and Winebarger was later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other responding agencies were the Lyman County Sheriff's Office, Lyman County Ambulance, Presho Fire Department and Reliance Fire Department.
