Missoula, MT : MHP trooper injured in head-on collision on U.S. Highway 93 south of Hamilton on Thursday morning, March 9, 2017

Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Bennett suffered a broken ankle Thursday morning in a head-on collision with another car on U.S. Highway 93 south of Hamilton.

Trooper Drew Novak said the crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. Bennett was driving northbound and a Dodge Intrepid driven by another man was southbound. Novak said the road was snowy and the front tires of the Dodge were “worn past the safe limits.”

“Due to the bald tires and the snowy road conditions, the driver of the Intrepid lost control as he negotiated a curve,” Novak said.

Bennett steered right to attempt to avoid a collision, but the two vehicles hit head-on in the shoulder of the northbound lanes, Novak said. Both men were transported to the hospital. According to Montana Highway Patrol officials, Bennett was to have surgery on a shattered ankle on Thursday. The other driver had “non-life-threatening injuries.”
