Brunswick County, NC : Pickup truck driver injured after collision with log truck near Exum Road in Ash early Friday morning, August 26, 2016

A pickup truck driver was airlifted to the hospital following a collision with a log truck in Brunswick County early Friday morning.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. on Makatoka Road near Exum Road in Ash.

According to officials, the pickup truck was pinned under the log truck's trailer as a result of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck, Michael Simmons of Ash, was extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. Officials said Simmons underwent surgery at the hospital and is listed in serious condition, as of 3 p.m.

According to the State High Patrol, the driver of the log truck said he was pulling onto Makatoka Road but by the time he saw the headlights of the pickup truck, he couldn't stop. The log truck driver, William Jordan, of Chadbourn, wasn't injured in the wreck.

Charges are pending against Jordan.

At this point, investigators don't believe either vehicle in the wreck was driving at excessive speeds.
