Othello, WA : 1 dead, 3 children hurt in head-on near Othello on Monday, January 23, 2017

A 19-year-old Othello man was killed and three children hurt in a head-on collision on Highway 17 south of Othello on Monday.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating if the driver accused of causing the wreck was drinking or using drugs.

Eduardo Martinez Ramirez, 21, of Othello, was driving south in a 1999 Honda Civic when he allegedly tried to pass slower moving cars near Booker Road, north of Scooteney Park.

He collided with a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante going the opposite direction at 5:19 p.m.

His passenger Fernando Ramirez Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car and killed. Ramirez and a second passenger, Emilio S. Martinez, 18, of Othello, were taken to Othello Community Hospital with injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai was not injured, but the driver of the Mitsubishi, Gerardo Medel, 31, of Moses Lake, and his passengers, a 9-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl, and 1-year-old boy, were taken to Othello Community Hospital.
