Baton Rouge, LO : Second man dies from injuries in multi-car crash Friday on I-110 on Monday, January 9th 2017

A 25-year-old man died Monday from injuries sustained in a Friday car crash on Interstate 110 near the Government Street exit, the second person to die in a series of wrecks police said were caused by a drunk driver.

Joshua Wheeler died after spending the weekend in treatment for injuries he sustained in the crash, said Sgt. Don Coppola Jr., a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

Wheeler was fatally injured when another driver, whom police suspect was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, crashed head-on into Wheeler's car on I-110 around 3:30 a.m. Friday.

The other driver, whom police haven't publicly identified, was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer the wrong way down the interstate when he collided with Wheeler, according to police.

Two passing motorists stopped to assist the crash victims, including 44-year-old Joseph Burnette, according to Baton Rouge police. As Burnette was walking back to his vehicle from the wreck, a Freightliner 18-wheeler crashed into the stalled cars, pinning Burnette between the crashed vehicles and killing him.
