Crash on Highway 30 near Astoria

Troopers on the Oregon coast are looking for the hit-and-run driver of a Honda Passport after he drove over the center line crashing head-on into another vehicle and critically injuring one person.

The crash was reported about eight miles east of Astoria Friday night around 9:30 p.m. along Highway 30 near Burnside Loop Road.

Investigators have learned that a 2002 Dodge Neon with three people inside was traveling along Hwy. 30 when a gray 1996 Honda Passport SUV crossed the center-line and collided head-on with the Dodge.

The driver of the Honda reportedly fled the scene on foot. Troopers think that, based on the initial investigation, that driver may have suffered unknown injuries. OSP reports traffic was heavy at the time of the crash and potential witnesses may not have talked to troopers or may have picked up the driver “unaware of the person’s direct involvement in the crash,” a trooper said in a prepared statement.

The 21-year-old driver of the Doge was flown to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with critical injuries. The two other passengers in his vehicle were transported a local hospital on the coast with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers have not released any of the victims’ names. Troopers closed Hwy. 30 in both directions for about one hour. It was eventually reopened once troopers could collect evidence.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Oregon State Police Northern Command Center dispatch line at 1800-452-7888.
