Dorrance Township, PA : One killed, one injured in Two-vehicle crash on I-81 in Luzerne County early Sunday morning, January 24, 2016

A 21-year-old Peckville man was killed early Sunday morning when the vehicle he was riding in was involved in a crash on Interstate 81.

According to Pennsylvania State Police at Hazleton, James Douglas Walsh, 21 of Peckville, was identified as the deceased victim. Police said Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Meri Jones pronounced Walsh dead at the scene.

According to the police report, the investigation revealed that the vehicle Walsh was riding in a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo operated by Jesse David Mayne, 22 of Eynon, was traveling northbound on I-81 when it was involved in a crash around 5:40 a.m. Police said Mayne and Walsh were both wearing seatbelts.

Police said the vehicle became disabled in the northbound travel lanes when it was struck by a 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by Erby Lewis Sims, 53, of Chicago, Illinois. Police said Sims and a passenger in the tractor-trailer, Marcus Williams, 25, of Chicago, also were both wearing seatbelts.

Neither Sims nor Williams were injured. Mayne was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

State police ask anyone who may have seen a yellow Dodge Ram truck in the area, or anyone who may have witnessed the crash, to contact state police at Hazleton at 570-459-3890.

I-81 was closed for approximately five hours. Assisting at the scene were Hanover Township and Dorrance Township EMS units, Wright Township and Dorrance Township fire departments and Act Towing Co.
