Three people, including a Reno resident, suffered major injuries in a multi-vehicle crash reported Wednesday night on U.S. 395 just outside Susanville, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers say a 2002 Toyota Camry was heading south on Highway 395 at about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, south of Sunnyside Road in unincorporated Lassen County.
The driver of the Camry attempted to pass several slower moving cars by driving left of double-parallel yellow lines, according to CHP. Distant view in the area is also obstructed by a curve in the road, the agency said in its report.
A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading north on 395. The drivers of the two vehicles saw each other and attempted to avoid colliding by moving into the east shoulder.
The vehicles crashed, and the driver and passenger in the Jeep suffered major injuries, CHP reported. They were identified as residents of Susanville, ages 66 and 68.
Another vehicle, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, was driving north on 395. This driver, identified as a 31-year-old man from Reno, tried to stop but could not avoid hitting the other cars. Officers say he suffered major injuries as well.
The driver of the Camry, a 53-year-old Reno man, declined medical attention, and he was released at the scene, according to officers. The driver of the Jeep was taken to Banner Lassen Medical Center, while the passenger of the Jeep and the driver of the Tacoma were taken to Renown in Reno.
