Gibson,GA : Motorist charged after crashing into ambulance on February, Wednesday 28th 2018

A car and ambulance crashed at a busy Carrollton intersection Wednesday afternoon, crunching the passenger car, knocking over the ambulance and sending two people to the hospital.

According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary investigation, the driver of the car failed to yield, crossing into the path of the ambulance.

The accident occurred about 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of Bankhead Highway and the Carrollton Bypass.

According to the state patrol, the ambulance was traveling northbound on the bypass in the left lane while approaching the intersection.

A 1987 Mustang GT was stopped in the left turn lane on the bypass on the other side of the intersection, waiting to turn left onto Highway 166 but the driver of the Mustang, 47-year-old Leif Causey of Whitesburg, failed to yield and turned into the path of the ambulance, according to the state patrol investigation.

The ambulance steered into the right lane in an attempt to avoid the Mustang but could not miss the vehicle. The front of Mustang struck the left front side of the ambulance. After impact, the ambulance struck the curb, causing it to overturn before resting upside down off the east shoulder.

A witness who was directly behind Causey told the state patrol that the traffic light was green for thru-traffic with a flashing yellow arrow for left turning traffic.

Causey has been charged with failure to yield while turning left but the report has not yet been completed.

The driver and a passenger in the ambulance were both injured and taken to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.
