LENOX, MA : Florida woman, 88, dies after dramatic Lenox crash on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016

A Florida woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured in Wednesday's dramatic crash near the Patterson-Egleston Monument in the center of Lenox.

Nancy Goessel, 88, of Naples, died after being extricated from the wreckage of a 2011 Jaguar sedan, which landed on its roof after inexplicably striking several vehicles and the monument, according to a statement released Thursday by Lenox Police Chief Stephen E. O'Brien.

Her husband, William Goessel, also 88, was driving west on Walker Street about 3:13 p.m. when he swerved into the oncoming lane and struck a Ford Explorer, the report said. The Jaguar then sideswiped a parked 2012 Volkswagen Jetta and continued accelerating west on Walker, in the eastbound lane.

The car then hit the curb and the monument, went airborne and struck another Volkswagen Jetta before rolling over and coming to rest on the lawn of Adams Community Bank.

The driver of the second Volkswagen, Jorja Flaherty, of Pittsfield, and her infant child, who was properly secured in a rear child restraint, were transported to Berkshire Medical Center, where they were treated and released.

Flaherty's husband, WBEC-FM radio host Bryan Slater, posted a brief message on his Facebook page stating Flaherty and their child are OK.

The Goessels also were transported to BMC. Nancy Goessel was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m.; her husband remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The scene of the crash was strewn with parts and debris from both vehicles, including a hood ripped from one of them, a gas tank and one of the Jaguar's wheels, which came to rest dozens of feet away from the crash.

The Paterson-Egleston Monument was dedicated in 1892 in honor of a pair of Revolutionary War officers from Lenox, Maj. Gen. John Paterson and Maj. Azariah Egleston.

The Lenox Police were assisted by the Lenox Fire Department, the Lee and Stockbridge Police departments, the Massachusetts State Police of the Lee barracks, the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), and several witnesses and bystanders that were at the scene, O'Brien said.

The crash remains under investigation and as of Thursday morning, no criminal charges had been filed.
