SAN JOSE, CA : Fatal Hwy. 101 crash on the northbound side of the freeway on Thursday, 16th January, 2020

A man was killed in a crash on Highway 101 in San Jose late Thursday night when his car split in half and burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported about 11:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, south of Story Road, said CHP Officer Ross Lee.

A Dodge Challenger had been driving northbound in the fast lane at speeds topping 100 mph, Lee said, when it suddenly careened across all lanes of traffic and onto the dirt embankment near the Interstate 280 split.

At that point, the car lost control and hit a guardrail and then spun into the pole of an overhead sign — splitting the car in half and causing it to go up in flames.

It’s not clear whether the driver suffered injuries in the impact or if he was killed in the fire, Lee said. Arriving officers found him inside the car.

The vehicle he was driving appeared to have been stolen out of South San Francisco, Lee said.
