Maui County, HI : Pedestrian dies in traffic collision at the Wainee Street intersection in Lahaina on Thursday, 2nd January, 2020

A pedestrian crossing Lahainaluna Road was killed when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle Thursday night in the first traffic death of the year in Maui County, police said.Lisa Salmon, a 57-year-old Lahaina resident, died at the scene of the collision at the Wainee Street intersection in Lahaina, police said.

The collision occurred at 8:15 p.m.

Police said a 2018 Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle was traveling south on Wainee Street and turning left onto Lahainaluna Road. A 19-year-old Lahaina woman driving the Toyota failed to see the pedestrian, who was walking south on Wainee Street and crossing Lahainaluna Road in a crosswalk, police said.

The Toyota driver was using her seat belt and wasn’t injured, police said.
