Mitchell,SD : One injured in car vs. semi collision Sunday in Mitchell on December, Sunday 10th 2017

A Mitchell woman sustained minor injuries Sunday morning after the vehicle she was driving was struck by a semi truck.

At 11:20 a.m., 88-year-old Doris Lunde was traveling west in a 2011 Acura on the Highway 37 Bypass when she attempted to make a left turn onto Sanborn Boulevard, according to Mitchell Police Officer Kelly Loudenburg.

While making the left turn, Lunde did not see the oncoming Kenworth semi-tractor trailer, driven by 64-year-old Dwight Rash, and the two vehicles collided. The Acura's airbags were deployed, Loudenburg said.

Both Lunde and Rash were wearing seat belts. Lunde was transported to Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell with minor injuries. They were the only passengers of each vehicle.

"It could've been a lot worse," Loudenburg said, noting the vehicle driven by Lunde was struck on the passenger side and not the driver's side.

Lunde was cited with failure to yield to right-of-way while making the left turn.

Lunde's vehicle is totaled, Loudenburg said, and both the Acura and the Kenworth semi were towed from the scene.

There was fluid leakage from the collision, according to Loudenburg, and the Mitchell Fire Division was dispatched for clean up.

Mitchell Police Division, Mitchell Fire and Mitchell Ambulance responded to the crash.
