Medford, OR : Truck crashes, spills gravel into road in east Medford on Thursday, 25th August, 2016

Mechanical failure is believed to have caused a gravel truck to overturn in east Medford Thursday afternoon.
No injuries were reported from the crash involving a Pacific Aggregate dump truck at the corner of Hillcrest and Roxy Ann roads, according to Medford police Officer Jim Swanson. The driver climbed out of the truck with no injuries after it flipped onto its side, spilling a full payload onto the road, which blocked both lanes.
At about 2:15 p.m., after leaving the quarry on Roxy Ann Road, the truck reportedly experienced a mechanical failure that prevented it from slowing down, causing it to roll over and spill gravel onto both lanes of Hillcrest.
The truck scraped a sidewalk and wiped out the stop sign on Roxy Ann, but no houses were damaged. No other pedestrians or other vehicles were involved.
The truck driver, who declined to give his name, said the truck's transmission and brakes both failed as he came down the hill with a full load. The truck tumbled onto its side and slid to the far side of Hillcrest, spreading a pile of gravel along the way. The driver said his truck had just weighed in at 53,000 pounds before heading down the hill.
"That was one scary ride," the driver said.
Police are still verifying exactly what caused the crash, Swanson said.
A lane on Hillcrest was cleared within 20 minutes, thanks to Medford Fire-Rescue cleanup crews. By 3 p.m., a team of six men with the help of a loader had cleared the bulk of the gravel off the road. The team, supplied by Pacific Aggregate, also waved traffic through with signs. The loader also pulled the diesel-powered dump truck back up on its wheels within an hour after the crash.
