Man and dog die in car-tree accident near Holton

Police believe speed was a factor in an accident that killed a Newaygo man and his dog near Holton on Friday afternoon.The 67-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was traveling east in the 6000 block of East Holton-Whitehall Road just west of Holton when he lost control of his red Ford sedan. The vehicle went off the side of the road and slammed into a tree.Michigan State Police Trooper Phil Marshall said the man and dog were killed on impact.Marshall believes the man was traveling too fast around a curve in the roadway, swerved slightly left and lost control. The vehicle rolled over onto its side after hitting the tree.The Holton Fire Department arrived at the scene first and found the man not breathing. A Blue Lake fire unit also responded to the scene for traffic control.Police are still investigating the scene. East Holton-Whitehall Road remains closed west of Holton Road.
