Haywood, OK : 64-year-old McAlester woman killed in a two-vehicle crash in Pittsburg County on Saturday, December 31, 2016

A 64-year-old McAlester woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash north of Haywood Saturday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said in a press release that the collision occurred at about 11:25 a.m. on Haywood Road, 1.5 miles south of US Highway 270, approximately two miles north of Haywood in Pittsburg County.

Authorities said a Chevrolet Impala driven by Kathy Smith, 64, of McAlester was headed southbound on Haywood Road when she attempted to make a left turn into a driveway, in front of a truck driven by Timothy Rice, 44, of Council Hill.

Smith was pinned in the vehicle for about 30 minutes. She was extracted by the McAlester Fire Department using the Hurst Rescue Tool. She was pronounced dead at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Rice was treated and released for a leg injury. Rice was wearing his seat belt but the press release said Smith was not wearing hers. The cause of the collision was listed as improper left turn.
