An 71-year-old man was hospitalized after he was hit on his bicycle by a woman distracted by her an infant east of Goshen on Wednesday.

The victim was riding east on S.R. 4 near C.R. 133 when he was struck by a 2007 Chrysler Sebring and thrown from the bike. He suffered a serious cut to his right arm and was conscious but not responsive at the scene.

A MedFlight helicopter airlifted the victim from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff's Department press release.

Police say both vehicles were driving eastbound on S.R. 4, with Yoder's bicycle on the shoulder, when a 21-year-old woman driving the Chrysler was distracted by her 2-year-old passenger. Her vehicle struck Yoder's rear tire and he was thrown from the bicycle on impact.

The woman in the Chrysler was not injured in the accident, according to the press release. Her vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side windshield, bumper and headlight. The back tire of the victim's bicycle was mangled, along with a cart he was towing.

The Chrysler driver consented to a blood draw for police to determine whether she was intoxicated when the accident happened.
