SOMERSET, MA : Three hurt, one critically, in 2-car Somerset crash on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2016

Three people, with one reported to be in critical condition, were transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital following a two-car crash Tuesday evening at the intersection of Old Colony Avenue and Pleasant Street.

Dispatchers called in the accident around 6:45 p.m. A black Chevrolet Cavalier and a maroon Honda Accord, both with heavy front-end damage, had come to complete stops in the brush and trees at the intersection. An airbag appeared to have deployed in the Cavalier. As of around 7:30 p.m., a few police cruisers blocked off the area of the accident and at least one flatbed tow truck and an ambulance were still at the scene.

Police Chief George McNeil did not identify the victims, except to say that the individual reported in critical condition was a man in his early 90s. The other two people, the ages for whom were not provided, appeared to have suffered minor injuries.

As of about 9 p.m., an accident reconstruction had not yet been performed.

Based on preliminary reports, McNeil said, “It appears that one did not yield the right of way to the person who had the right of way, which is the person in the Honda, and the other person drove right into them. We don’t know that for sure right now.”McNeil said the collision may have occurred because of a lack of traffic controls at the intersection. There is no stop sign or traffic light at the intersection, nor did there appear to be a one-way sign in the immediate area to clearly indicate that Old Colony Avenue is a one-way street.

Onlookers who live in the neighborhood told The Herald News that traffic on Old Colony Avenue is supposed to be one way, but that the street is occasionally prone to wrong-way drivers.

Residents who live near the scene of the accident described hearing a loud crash when it occurred.
