FLORENCE, AL : 1 injured in wreck on Saturday, January, 30th 2017

A Florence man was flown to Huntsville Hospital Saturday morning after he was involved in a wreck that left him and his car submerged in Cox Creek.

Emergency officials said the 89-year-old man was communicating with paramedics at the scene.

Police said he was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, and later flown to Huntsville.

Reports indicate the accident happened at 10:39 a.m. on Wood Avenue near Big Star Super Market.

Police Sgt. Greg Cobb said the two vehicles were heading north on Wood Avenue when the crash occurred. The vehicle in the outside lane went off the road and into the creek.

Officials at the scene said according to witnesses, the elderly man’s car went into the creek and flipped upside down.

“The man was apparently trapped in the car. Some people saw the car go into the creek and they were able to go in and get the car flipped back over,” said Police Sgt. Chris Ticer. “Firefighters got there and were able to go into the creek and get the man out of the car.”

Cobb said the driver of the other car, a Florence woman, was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florence Police Department.
