Jefferson City,TN : Driver flees after causing I-81 wreck on October, Tuesday 24th 2017

A driver fled the scene after causing a three-vehicle crash that injured multiple people on Interstate 81 near the I-40 interchange Tuesday, troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol report.

Six Maryland residents and a Pennsylvania resident traveling in an SUV were taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center following the 3:55 p.m. accident at the one mile-marker, according to a preliminary report released by the Highway Patrol. A 20-year-old mom and her 16-month-old son in another vehicle were also taken to the medical center.

UT’s Lifestar helicopter and Jefferson County Emergency Medical Service transported the victims.

Troopers report that a vehicle described only as a “dark colored SUV” struck the rear of a 2011 Kia Soul while both were headed north on the interstate. The impact caused the Soul to go into a yaw to the left and cross the median, where it struck a southbound 2002 Acura MDX at an angle in the left lane.

The Kia Soul was pushed backward and came to rest in the left lane of I-81 south, while the Acura came to rest in the median, the troopers reported. The driver of the dark SUV fled the scene. Troopers were able to obtain only a sketchy description of the vehicle from witnesses.

The driver of the Soul was identified as Breeanna S. Harley of Harriman. She and her child were taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The driver of the Acura was Sarah Grace Derr, 35, of Big Pool, Maryland. With her in the vehicle were six people, five of them teenagers, according to the report. They included Jonathan Ireland, 23, of Hagerstown; Grace Fogle, 16, of Hagerstown, Alyssa Gettel, 16, of Hagerstown; Faith Klein of Green Castle, Pennsylvania; and Alani White, 14, of Hagerstown. According to the report, all were taken for medical treatment.

Both drivers were wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to the preliminary report.
