Port Washington, WI : One person killed in a crash on I-43 near Pioneer Road in Ozaukee County on Monday afternoon, May 23, 2016

One person was killed Monday afternoon in a crash on northbound I-43 in Ozaukee County, the Sheriff's Office said.

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m. at Pioneer Road, according to a news release from the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office.

According to the release, a tire blew on a northbound SUV, causing the vehicle to roll over and strike the median barrier before coming to a rest in the southbound lanes.

A female passenger was killed when she was ejected from the back seat of the vehicle, and the driver and a front seat passenger, both males, were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to the release.

The crash shut down the southbound lanes of I-43 at Pioneer Road for about two hours and caused traffic backups of three miles, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

As of 4:30 p.m. the DOT was still advising motorists to avoid the area because of the backups.

Southbound motorists were encouraged to follow a detour route by exiting at Pioneer Road, going west on Pioneer Road to State Highway 181, then south on Highway 181 to Mequon Road, then east on Mequon Road back to I-43.

The crash remained under investigation, the sheriff's office said.
