Petaluma, CA : Two young sisters were killed when their car overturned at the Petaluma River on Wednesday, 31st August, 2016

Two young sisters, ages 7 and 9, were killed when their car overturned into the Petaluma River Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The girls have been identified as Delilah Gonzalez,9, and Sayra Gonzalez,7.

Both sisters are from Rohnert Park and were not wearing car seats at the time of the accident, the CHP said.

The girls’ mother, Alejandra Hernandez, 26, of Rohnert Park, was driving them to school when the crash happened just before 8 a.m. on Petaluma Boulevard North.

The car drifted into the center median then veered off the road, down an embankment, and into the Petaluma River.

Hernandez did not have a driver’s license and was able to get out of the car. She had minor injuries, but was not taken to the hospital.

Two witnesses saw the crash and helped pull the two sisters from the car.

The sisters were then transported to a hospital where both girls were pronounced.

The crash has closed the northbound lane of Petaluma Boulevard North between Sycamore and Skillman lanes. The roadway re-opened just after 2pm Wednesday.
