Chico,CA : Bicyclist struck in Cohasset Road crash dies on July, Friday 21th 2017

A bicyclist was gravely injured and later died in a crash Friday afternoon south of the Chico airport, police said.

The crash happened about 5 p.m. in the area of Cohasset Road and Thorntree Drive, north of Eaton Road, Lt. Billy Aldridge said.

The bicyclist, identified as a 31-year-old man, was struck by a northbound Dodge pickup somewhere near Cohasset and Thorntree, Aldridge said. The bicyclist’s direction of travel was not immediately available.

Passing motorists pulled the bicyclist out from under the pickup and performed CPR on the man before medics arrived, the lieutenant said. The bicyclist was later taken to Enloe Medical Center, and his condition was not immediately known at the scene.

Aldridge said he was unsure whether the bicyclist would survive the crash. He added, “It’s a major accident.”

Neither drugs nor alcohol was immediately suspected in the wreck, Aldridge said. It was not yet known whether speed may have played a role.

The pickup sustained significant front-end damage. Debris and personal effects were strewn nearby.

The Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene.

A stretch of Cohasset Road, from Eaton Road and farther north, was closed to traffic for several hours as officers investigated.

The Police Department tweeted just after 10 p.m. that the road had reopened “following car vs. bicycle fatality.”
