Mitchell, SD : 10-year-old boy from Geddes identified in fatal crash on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016

A 10-year-old boy killed in a Wednesday afternoon crash near Dakota Christian School east of Platte has been identified.

Andrew Sybesma, of Geddes, died after the vehicle he was a passenger in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck entered the intersection with South Dakota Highway 44 and collided with another car while traveling south on 376th Avenue at 3:30 p.m.Sybesma, as well as the 14-year-old male driver and 11-year-old female passenger were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the truck. The other two juveniles are also from Geddes and suffered minor injuries.

The crash occurred near Dakota Christian School, a private, faith-based school for students in pre-kindergarten through high school.

Chandra Dykshorn, the 27-year-old driver of the second vehicle, a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as two juveniles, ages 2 and 4, suffered minor injuries. The juveniles were in child seats. All three occupants of the jeep are from New Holland.

Names of the other people involved are not being released, as they are juveniles.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety’s website says a 14-year-old can legally drive in the state, but there are limitations.

According to the Department of Public Safety, 14 is the minimum age that a person can obtain a driver’s license. A 14-year-old driver must first hold an instruction permit for at least 180 days, which allows a person to drive between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. with a licensed adult.

After 180 days, a juvenile between the ages of 14 and 18 are allowed to hold a restricted minor’s permit. With this permit, the driver may operate a vehicle unsupervised from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with approval from a parent or guardian. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the driver must have a parent or guardian in the vehicle.
