An Epping man is accused of driving impaired before a crash Monday night on Interstate 93 in Canterbury that left a woman dead.

James Deveau, 50, faces felony-level aggravated driving while under the influence of drugs and operating after suspension, New Hampshire State Police said. Deveau was arrested at Concord Hospital where he was receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Nichole Dempsey, 43, of Plymouth, who was the front-seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger, Robert Ayer, 37, of Concord, was also seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital.

State police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on I-93 southbound at about 4:35 p.m. Their initial investigation revealed that a 1999 Dodge Durango was traveling south and, for an unknown reason, veered off the road, went down an embankment and struck a large tree. The vehicle came to rest in the tree line.

The interstate was restricted to one lane for approximately four hours Monday night while police investigated the crash. The New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, as well as first responders from Canterbury, Northfield, Tilton and Penacook assisted.
