Columbus, GA : Bus driver dies following crash on Garrett Road on Monday morning, August 22, 2016

The Muscogee County school bus driver involved in this morning’s single-vehicle crash at Garrett and Jackson roads has died, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed.

Officials said Roy Newman, 67 of Columbus was pronounced dead at Midtown Medical Center at 11:12 a.m. His body will be sent off for an autopsy at the Georgia Bureau Investigation crime lab in Decatur.

Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said seven Mathews Elementary students between the ages of 5 and 9 years old were traveling on bus No. 591 when it left the roadway for an unknown reason and crashed head-on into a tree around 7:44 a.m. He said officials with the Columbus Fire and EMS had to extricate the bus driver and two children.

All seven students, four of whom have serious injuries, are being treated at the hospital, MCSD communications director Valerie Fuller said in a news release.

Four of the students were rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, and three were treated at the scene. The parents of those treated at the scene took their children to the hospital for further examination, Fuller said.

Columbus Police Maj. J.D. Hawk said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
