Belleville, IL : St. Louis man dies in Illinois 3 crash on Thursday, January 19th 2017

A 28-year-old St. Louis man died early Thursday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Illinois 3, police said.

The crash happened at 5:48 a.m. near the intersection of Illinois 3 and Eighth Street near Sauget, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

Police said the man was driving a silver 2009 Dodge Caliber north on Illinois 3 when the vehicle drifted out of its lane and struck a traffic pole at the Eighth Street intersection. Police said the engine was thrown nearly 50 feet from the vehicle.

Police said the driver was the only occupant in the car. The identity of the driver was being withheld until family members were notified. Police said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic on Illinois 3 had been backed up at Eighth Street, but all lanes of traffic on Illinois 3 were reopened by 8 a.m., according to a Facebook post made by state police.
