Coral Springs, FL : Fort Lauderdale detective killed in collision on State Road 7 early Saturday morning, August 20, 2016

Authorities say a Fort Lauderdale police officer has died after a driver slammed into the back of his Jeep.

Coral Spring police said in a statement that 30-year-old Det. Christopher Sheehan was driving on State Road 7 early Saturday morning when he was rear-ended by 29-year-old Joselyn Lopez, of Margate.

Sheehan was declared dead at the scene, while Lopez was not injured.

Police say 41-year-old Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Capt. Jacob Snowhite was a passenger in the Jeep. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed, but police say speed and alcohol might have been contributing factors in the wreck.

Fort Lauderdale police confirmed that Sheehan worked for the department, but declined to comment further, citing the open investigation.
