Hot Springs, S.D : Four people injured in a two-vehicle accident near Angostura Den on Thursday afternoon, Aug ust 18, 2016

Four passengers, including one with life-threatening injuries, were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital Thursday afternoon, Aug. 18, following a two-vehicle accident three miles south of Maverick Junction, near Angostura Den.

According to Tony Mangan with the Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at 12:30 p.m. near Hot Springs after a southbound 2012 Dodge Ram pickup had pulled over to stop along the roadside of U.S. Highway 385 near mile-marker 48. It then attempted to pull back into the driving lane of traffic.

At that time, the driver of an oncoming Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer, southbound in the driving lane, saw the Dodge Ram pickup along the right side of the road, but pulling back onto the highway. The semi attempted to swerve around the pickup, but instead the front passenger side of the semi’s cab collided nearly broadside with the driver’s side of the Dodge.

All four occupants of the Dodge pickup were injured. The most severely was the driver, Alicia Pullins, 29, of Hot Springs who suffered life-threatening injuries.

The other three passengers included a 35-year-old male, Erik Cilburn-Tillman of Hot Springs, who suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries, and two younger females aged 13 and 9. Both children were injured and transported to Regional Hospital, but the extent of their injuries was unknown.

The driver of the Peterbilt, Josh Wentz of Bismark, N.D., a 21-year-old male, was uninjured.

Two different Life Flight helicopters landed on the scene of the accident and transported two of the most severely injured to the Rapid City hospital. The two other injured patients were taken there as well by ambulance.

The S.D. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Other departments responding were Hot Springs Ambulance, Hot Springs Police and the Fall River Sheriff.
