Jeffersonville, IN : Students injured in crashes involving 2 Greater Clark County Schools buses on Friday August 8th 2014

Twenty-two middle school students and two adults who were taken to area hospitals after a crash involving a car and two Greater Clark County School buses have been released. Norton Healthcare spokeswoman Courtney Bisig said the 13 students who were treated to Kosair Children's Hospital sustained very minor injuries. Nine additional students and two adults were taken to Clark Memorial Hospital for treatment for minor aches and pains, according to a spokeswoman for the hospital. The crash involving school buses 001 and 954 happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday at Crestview and Brigman Avenue in Jeffersonville. All 47 students aboard the buses attend Parkview Middle School, said GCCS Supervisor of Communications Erin Bojorquez. Witnesses told police it appeared the driver of one of the buses could not stop and hit the back of the other bus, knocking it out into the street where it collided with the car. Amazingly, witnesses say the woman driving the car and her male passenger were walking around right after the accident. As for the students, emergency crews used rescue tools to get the back door off the bus in the middle of the street. School and emergency officials set up a make shift triage in a neighbors yard for the remaining 25 students. Students uninjured in the crash were taken back to the school and their parents were contacted. Superintendent Andy Mellin said, “We checked them out medically before they were released they were transported back to Parkview Middle School.” School District leaders said it's too early to determine if there was a brake malfunction. Indiana Department of Transportation officers were at the crash to look at the mechanics of the buses. Jeffersonville police said the inspection should help their investigation.
