A 30-year-old man was killed Christmas Day in New Smyrna Beach after his motorcycle crashed into a palm tree, splitting it in half, police said.
Mattheu Laurrell, of Edgewater, was traveling at "a high rate of speed" just before 2 p.m. in the 500 block of North Riverside Drive when he lost control and went off the road, New Smyrna Beach police said.
The tree split in half after he hit it, according to police.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Laurrell was not wearing a helmet.
An autopsy will be conducted.
