New Castle,IN : Hagerstown man injured during I-70 crash on February, Wednesday 28th 2018

A Hagerstown man remained in intensive care Wednesday morning at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a traffic accident that claimed the life of a Virginia man Tuesday on Interstate 70 in Henry County.

According to a media release provided by the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, the accident took place at the westbound 123 mile marker, which is the Spiceland/New Castle exit.

At 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, a semi-truck rear-ended a disabled passenger car that had been involved in an accident just minutes prior, the release said. Three people were standing near the vehicle trying to assist with the previous accident when two of them were struck by an oncoming semi.

One of the men struck, Edward Crawford of Rustburg, Virgina, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel. The driver of the passenger vehicle, Draake Cates of Hagerstown, was also struck. Cates was taken via helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with “severe” injuries.

According to a hospital representative, Cates remained a patient at the facility Wednesday morning in a trauma room of the intensive care unit. Additional details about the injuries he sustained were not immediately available.

The accident is being investigated by the Henry County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the Indiana State Police.
