WEST BRANCH, IA : A driver died in a crash on Interstate 80 on Sunday, July 9, 2017

A driver died in a crash on Interstate 80 after crashing into a bridge support column.

According to Iowa State Patrol crash reports, the driver was heading westbound on I-80 around 7:15 p.m. when the crash happened. The driver went into the median, hit a bridge support and was thrown from the vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Journey.

The Journey then caught fire, according to the crash report. Smoke could be seen from several miles away.

There were several squad cars and multiple ambulances on scene.

While crews worked at the area, eastbound traffic was backed up between Exit 254 and Exit 259.

The driver’s name was not yet available. There was no word on what caused the crash.
