Dalton, GA : Fast driver killed in a wreck in Murray County early Sunday morning, January 1, 2017

A 19-year-old Dalton man died in an automobile crash after reportedly driving in excess of 90 miles per hour in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

According to Murray County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Brian Ingle, Oscar Ortiz died at the scene of the wreck on Highway 286 and Goswick Road in Murray County near the Whitfield County line and the Dawnville area.

"A Georgia State Patrol trooper was patrolling on Highway 286 and clocked him going over 90 miles an hour," Ingle said. "By the time the trooper turned around and tried to stop him, and before he could catch up with him, he had already crashed."

The crash is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol's office in Calhoun. Messages left for Cpl. Jack Lawrence, who worked the wreck, were not returned Monday night.

A funeral service in honor of Ortiz will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Dalton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
