The Hudson County corrections officer charged in the hit-and-run crash Sunday night that killed two county political leaders is due in court Tuesday for his first hearing.

Michael J. Hansen, 38, of North Bergen, is charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death. Hansen faces up to 10 years in prison on the second-degree charges.

He is due to make an initial appearance in Superior Court in Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon, said Ray Worrall, a spokesman for the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Russell Maffei, 57, and Marie Tauro, 80, both of Jersey City, were struck and killed just after 8 p.m., as they crossed the street near the Coach House Diner on Kennedy Boulevard in North Bergen, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

Maffei and Tauro were at the diner to meet fellow Republicans for a strategy session on the June primaries.

Tauro was a commissioner at the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority, and Maffei was head of the Jersey City Republican party and a GOP state committeeman.
