Hahnville, LA : Man killed after car crosses levee, goes airborne Tuesday morning, January 17, 2017

A Hahnville man was killed Tuesday morning (Jan. 17) after the car he was driving crossed a Hahnville highway at a high speed and then went over the Mississippi River levee and into a ditch, becoming airborne before flipping several times, according to Louisiana State Police Troop B.

Chaquen Johnson, 47, was partially ejected in the crash, which occurred just before 7 a.m. near the intersection of La. 18 and La. 3160. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, Johnson was driving a Chevrolet Impala north on La. 3160, approaching La. 18, when, for unknown reasons, he crossed La. 18 at a high speed.

Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt and speed is suspected as a a factor in the crash, according to state police.

Impairment is not suspected, but a toxicology test will be performed during an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.
