KAAAWA, OH : Speeding a factor in fatal head-on crash, police say on Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

A 52-year-old Kahuku man driving a Mustang was killed early Wednesday when he crossed the center line on Kamehameha Highway near Kahana Bay and hit a truck head-on.It's the 50th traffic fatality on Oahu roads so far this year, compared to 43 at the same time last year.

Police said the Mustang was traveling in the Kahuku-bound direction about 5:20 a.m. when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.

A pick-up truck that was going in the Kaneohe-bound direction tried to avoid the car, but the Mustang cut back into its lane at the last minute and the vehicles collided, according to investigators.

The driver of the Mustang died at the scene, officials said. He lived with his girlfriend in Makaua Village.

Two men in the pickup truck, both in their 50s, were taken to a hospital in serious condition. Police said the two injured are brothers.

Relatives told Hawaii News Now that the men suffered broken bones, but are recovering.

"At this point, alcohol does not appear to be a factor. Speed is a possible factor," said Lt. Bobby Towne of the Honolulu Police Department.

The crash closed Kamehameha Highway for hours during the morning commute.

Residents who live near the crash scene said the Mustang's driver has been involved in close calls in the past.

"He speeds up and down the road like about five, six, seven times a day," said resident Hailama Kahala.

His wife said she has also encountered the Mustang during her daily walks.

"He's revving from way back before me and I can hear him over my iPod. He's flying right past me and sometimes he is in the two lanes," said Noelani Kupihea Kahala.

"It's sad, but it was bound to happen," said Kupihea Kahala. "I think that people need to stop and think that they choices that they make, it will happen. They can't go around thinking it's not going to happen to them."
