STATEN ISLAND, NY : Police identify motorcyclist in fatal Rosebank crash on July, Saturday 15th 2017

The 53-year-old man who died after police say his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck in Rosebank on Saturday has been identified as Michael Hines, according to the NYPD.

Hines, of Van Pelt Avenue in Mariners Harbor, was riding his motorcycle on Bay Street at approximately 12:04 p.m. when he was struck by a truck attempting to turn into a nearby gas station, police said.

Jesus Santiago, 65, of the 200 block of 54th Street in Brooklyn, remained on the scene after police said his red pickup truck struck Hines while attempting to turn into the Mobil station at the corner of Bay Street and Fingerboard Road around noon.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad determined Hines was traveling southbound on Bay Street when the pickup truck struck the bike, police said. The truck was attempting a left-turn from the northbound lane of Bay Street into the gas station, police said.

Pictures from the scene show the truck in the southbound lane of Bay Street, where the motorcyclist was traveling.

Santiago was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, police said.
