Alcohol may have contributed to a Thursday morning fatal crash in El Paso County.
A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 failed to yield at the intersection of Ellicott Road South and Sanborn Road and collided with a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle, according to the release. The Chevrolet rolled once, went through a fence and came to rest in a field. The Volkswagen also collided with the fence before coming to rest in the field.
The driver of the Volkswagen, 46-year-old Derek Burmeister of Calhan, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. The driver of the Chevrolet, 38-year-old Alexander Gutierrez of Colorado Springs, suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Troopers suspect alcohol to be a factor in the crash, but it is not clear which driver may have been intoxicated.
