West New York, NJ : 72-year-old man hit by car in Hudson County on Wednesday night, January 20, 2016

A 72-year-old pedestrian suffered a head injury after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in West New York, the county sheriff said.

Nicolas Valencia, of West New York, was hit by a 2000 Nissan Altima as he was crossing 62nd Street at 7:30 p.m., according to Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari.

West New York Police and the Hudson County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident, which occurred near Kennedy Boulevard, Schillari said. The car was driven by Francis Clerie, 22, of West New York, he said.

Valencia, who suffered a head injury, was treated by West New York EMS and Jersey City Medical Center Paramedics and transported to Hackensack Medical Center, the sheriff said.

Valencia was in serious condition Wednesday but by 7 a.m. Thursday his condition was downgraded to "stable," and he was conscious and talking, Schillari said.

No charges have yet been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, Schillari said. Investigators are reviewing video footage from a nearby building and analyzing evidence from the scene, he said. However, officials said they do not believe speed or cell phone use caused the crash.

According to Hudson County Sheriff's Office spokesman J.P. Escobar, officials are also investigating whether Valencia was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.
