Portland, OR : Possible SW Portland carjacking causes crash on interstate, police say on Saturday, 20th August, 2016

Traffic was backed up Saturday afternoon on Interstate 5 after police say a man suspected of a Southwest Portland carjacking caused a crash.

Emergency crews closed I-5 southbound near the Morrison Bridge immediately after the crash, then opened them and closed the northbound lanes. All lanes had reopened by 1:15 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation's TripCheck website.

Sgt. Greg Stewart said officers responded to a disturbance in the 7300 block Southwest Garden Home Road. Officers were told that a man, possibly armed with a knife, had demanded car keys from people in the area, Stewart said.

The man was attempting to carjack people in the area, he said. Police received multiple calls about the incident.

As Central Precinct officers looked for the man, a pair of East Precinct officers drove by a crash on the Morrison Bridge ramp leading to Interstate 84. That crash severely impacted I-5 traffic, Stewart said.

Police took a man into custody from the crash, and officers believe he may have a connection to the Garden Home incident, Stewart said. The public is not in danger, Stewart said.

Officers are continuing their investigation, he said at 1 p.m. This post will be updated as news develops.
