SCOTTSBURG, OR : Truck crash on Scottsburg Bridge closes Highway 38 on April, Wednesday 12th 2017

The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed Oregon Highway 38 after a semi-truck crashed into the Scottsburg Bridge Wednesday afternoon.

OSP Troopers responded about 2 p.m. to a report of a commercial vehicle crash on Highway 38 at mile post 16 on the Scottsburg Bridge. The semi-truck involved was hauling empty wooden pallets and crashed through the bridge railing, trapping the driver, 26-year-old Sergi Borodin from Seattle in the cab. Borodin was extricated by rescue personnel and transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and later released, according to Oregon State Police.

The crash resulted in a trailer falling into the river and pallets floating downstream. Diesel fuel from the semi also spilled into the river and is being addressed by the Department of Environmental Quality.

Speed is considered a contributing factor in the crash and Borodin was issued a citation for several traffic violations.

Unitl further notice, travelers need to choose alternate routes Oregon Highway 42 or Oregon Highway 126. There is no estimated time that ODOT will reopen the highway. Closure signs ware located along Highway 38 in Reedsport and Elkton as well as on Interstate 5 and U.S. Highway 101.

State Rep. David Brock Smith, R-Port Orford, said he received an email from an ODOT spokesman following the crash, advising him that the end post of the truss on the Scottsburg Bridge is bent out of alignment by 6 inches, calling into question the stability of the overall truss span of the bridge.
