Pleasanton, CA : Two die in fiery freeway crash on Interstate 580 in Pleasanton on Tuesday, September 16, 2014

California Highway Patrol investigators on Wednesday were trying to identify two people killed after the car they were in crashed into a tree off Interstate 580 Tuesday night and exploded into flames. The CHP is also trying to determine what kind of vehicle they were in and who the owner is. The two occupants were burned beyond recognition and the car was left a charred frame with its license plates destroyed, the CHP said. CHP Officer Steve Creel said Wednesday investigators believe one of the occupants is a woman and that the vehicle is possibly a dark colored sports car. Creel said investigators would be poring over the frame and vehicle engine looking for secondary ID numbers so they can determine who the owner is and who may have been in the car as well as determining what kind of vehicle it was. The fiery wreck happened just before 11 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of I-580 near the San Ramon Road offramp. Witnesses said the speeding car veered into a KIA SUV containing a family of adults and children before leaving the freeway and going down an embankment some 50 feet before hitting a tree and bursting into flames. Some surrounding brush was also burned in the fire. No one in the KIA was hurt and the bodies of the car occupants were found by firefighters who put out the fire.
