Overnight crash damaged the historical Veteran's Memorial Fountain in Belleville

An overnight crash damaged the historical Veteran's Memorial Fountain in downtown Belleville's Public Square.

About 4 a.m. a Toyota Camry with Missouri plates crashed into the north edge of the fountain, according to Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour.

The name of the driver, a male, was not released.

He was treated and released after suffering non-life threatening injuries.

Petroff Towing, of Caseyville, brought a rotator wrecker, or a boom arm tow truck, to lift the vehicle out of the fountain about 5:30 a.m.

The fountain suffered some external damage to the curb. Workers with the Belleville Maintenance Department will drain and clean the fountain to investigate if there is any additional damage.

The fountain was turned on last week when the Exchange Club erected crosses for the Easter holiday.

None of the crosses were damaged, Pour said.

The cause of the crash was not available Saturday morning.
