Huntsville,TX : TDCJ employee killed in traffic accident on October, Tuesday 10th 2017

A Texas Department of Criminal Justice correctional officer was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was thrown from his motorcycle during a traffic accident in Huntsville.

According to the incident report, a red Toyota Highlander was stopped on Spur 59 waiting to make a left turn onto State Highway 75 North just north of the Pilot Truck Stop at about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday.

As an 18-wheeler, which was traveling north on Highway 75, was attempting to make a right turn onto Spur 59, the Highlander proceeded into the intersection and struck a Honda VTX 1300 motorcycle traveling north.

"Basically what happened was the 18-wheeler obstructed the view of the female driving the Highlander as she was turning southbound onto 75," said Lt. Curt Landrum with the Huntsville Police Department. "She failed to yield the right of way and hit the motorcycle."

Officials with TDCJ confirmed Wednesday that the driver of the motorcycle was Sgt. James Lerma, 44, of Huntsville. He was the laundry manager at the Goree Unit in Huntsville and had been with the agency for 19 years.

Lerma was transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Mike Countz.

No one else was reportedly injured in the accident.
