Louisville, KY : Woman dies after crash involving school bus in Charlestown, Ind., on Friday morning, August 26, 2016

One woman is dead after a crash involving a school bus in Charlestown, Ind., Friday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Charlestown Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Andre Heal says the crash took place just before 9:30 a.m. in the 10000 block of S.R. 62 near S.R. 3.

According to Heal, a school bus was stopped at a railroad crossing when a passenger vehicle crashed into the back of it. A woman inside the passenger vehicle was killed as a result of the crash.

Her identity has not been released, but Andrews Melin, the Superintendent for Greater Clark County Schools, says she was the mother of two daughters who are students in the district. Melin says one daughter is a 4th grader at New Washington Elementary School, and the other is a 7th grader at New Washington Middle-High School.

Melin says she was driving her daughters to a doctor's appointment at the time of the crash. Her daughters were taken to Kosair Children's Hospital and are expected to be OK.

"I went to the hospital, as well as other administrators and a school counselor, to be available to support the family," Melin said. "Myself and the entire Greater Clark family are saddened about the incidents that occurred."

Melin says State Road 62 is a high-speed area, and buses must come to a complete stop at the railroad crossing.

"I think that's something that at least we need to pursue and talk to other officials and see if there is anything else we can do here, because two accidents in 10 days at that location is very concerning to all of us."

WDRB saw buses stopping at the tracks, which is required by law. But no train can even go on the tracks because the gated fence was padlocked Friday afternoon.

The school district is now focusing attention on the two girls.

"Right now, they are in good spirits," Melin said. "It seems as if they are not dealing with any major injuries."

Charlestown Police say they're looking into whether the driver was speeding and distracted because there are no tire marks.

A bus driver and bus monitor were on the bus at the time of the crash, but were not injured. There were no children on the bus.
