York, ME : Two people injured in a crash on Route 1 in Cape Neddick Monday morning, August 1, 2016

A crash on Route 1 in Cape Neddick Monday morning sent two people to local hospitals and caused traffic to be rerouted during the morning commute.

Police responded to Route 1 just north of Mountain Road at 7:30 a.m. for report of an accident involving two motor vehicles. York Beach Fire Department personnel found the drivers trapped in their cars and had to extricate them both quickly, police said.

Police said Brian Perry of Portland, Maine, was traveling northbound on Route 1 in a silver Volkswagen Jetta, when his vehicle crossed the center line and directly into the path of a black Honda Pilot driven by Kathleen Bean of Ogunquit, Maine, who was traveling southbound. Perry's car hit the vehicle head on, police said.
Bean was transported to York Hospital with apparent minor injuries. Perry was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with more serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Route 1 was closed for around two hours while police investigated the crash scene.
York police and a crash reconstruction team are investigating the cause of the crash, and will determine if charges are warranted, police said.
