Lafayette, IN : Man in critical condition after car crash in Lafayette Sunday morning, January 1, 2017

Ismael Rivera Tapia, a 21 year-old Lafayette resident, is in critical condition after an automobile accident in Lafayette Sunday morning.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Union Street and Sagamore Parkway. Tapia's car alighted the divider and became wedged between the median and light post. Due to the position of the car Tapia had to be extricated by the Lafayette Fire Department.

Tapia was originally transported to Franciscan Health Lafayette East but later moved to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Authorities said Tapia was the only person in the vehicle.

North and South bound lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The Lafayette Police Department said investigation into the incident is ongoing.
