Providence, R.I : Elderly woman killed crossing street in Providence on Thursday evening, January 5, 2017

An 80-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle after crossing a road in Providence, Thursday evening.

According to police, officers responded to the intersection of Plainfield Street and Pocasset Avenue around 4:30 p.m., for the report that a female had been struck by a vehicle.

Crews told ABC6 News the woman was walking toward a nearby gas station when she was struck. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and was pronounced dead. Police spent hours on scene conducting accident reconstruction and talking to potential witnesses, about the incident.

An officer on scene did tell ABC6 News the woman may have been walking in the crosswalk at the time she was hit.

The driver of the vehicle did cooperate on scene, according to Major Thomas Verdi. He added, it was too soon to tell if there would be any charges.

The woman's name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
