Jefferson County, IL : Correctional officer killed and teen injured in a traffic crash on Interstate 57 on Wednesday, January 20, 2016

A Marion County Sheriff’s Department Correctional Officer died Wednesday after an accident involving a semitrailer on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police.

At about 8 a.m., Adam Conrad, 22, of Sandoval, was driving a Marion County Sheriff’s Department Transport van going north on I-57 near mile marker 84 when Conrad lost control of the van due to icy conditions on the road.

The van crossed the median and entered the southbound traffic in the path of a semi driven by Donald Chambers, 46, of Springville, Indiana.

The semi hit the van on the front end of the passenger side, causing major damage. The semi jackknifed and stopped on the right shoulder of the road, and the van stopped in front of the semi.

The Jefferson County Rural Fire Department extricated Conrad and a 17-year-old passenger with incapacitating injuries from the van.

Conrad was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The juvenile was taken to a local hospital and later taken to a regional hospital.

Traffic was diverted off I-57 south for investigation, reconstruction and clean-up for about six hours Wednesday.

No charges have been filed.
